THE TWENTY-SECOND DAY: SATURDAY

GIVING EVERYTHING

“She out of her poverty has put in everything she had.” —Mark 12:44 (RSV)

When they entered Jerusalem, Jesus and His disciples went immediately to the Temple. The disciples were overcome with the grandeur of the imposing structure. King Herod had withheld no expense in the design and construction of this architectural wonder.

Lost in amazement, the disciples followed Jesus through the teeming crowds until they came to the large trumpet-shaped coffers where offerings were given to support the Temple. Standing in the shadows, Jesus watched as wealthy Passover pilgrims from all over the Mediterranean world deposited gold and silver coins into the Temple treasury.

Suddenly, an impoverished woman pushed her way to the front and let two tiny coins fall from her fingers. Looking into her eyes, Jesus sensed that these copper lepta were all that the woman possessed. Her life savings were less than a day’s wage, and she gave it all to God.

Moved by her action, Jesus turned to His disciples and said, “Truly I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all the contributors to the treasury; for they all put in out of their surplus, but she, out of her poverty, put in all she owned, all she had to live on” (Mark 12:43–44, NAS).

Much of what I have given to God has been what I can afford to give, what is left over at the end of the day, the tenth that I have budgeted as my tithe. Seldom have I given as this widow, knowing that there is nothing remaining, no savings account to back me up, no one to bail me out.

When Jesus looked into the widow’s eyes, He knew He must give His all. And it would cost more than two copper coins. It would cost Him His life.

Dear Father, may I follow You without fear of cost or consequence. —Scott Walker
